Being a proud Puerto Rican woman, I chose to paint a “jíbara”, which is a perfect reflection of Puerto Ricans and our culture. These were self-sustained farmers, which were authentic, kind, and hardworking. Ever since I was little, I have learned about their history and how they play a big role in my culture, which shows how important they are to the island.

Taking inspiration of the French art movement, impressionism, I gave contrast and texture to the painting. I placed light colors where there is brightness, and dark ones on the shadows. This process allowed for there to be constant movement in the piece, which brings it to life.
